The word enlightened gets thrown around a lot, but each individual tends to have their own idea of what it actually means. There are definitely different levels to it. So, let's break down the word itself.
Enlightened: en-light-ened
En - a unit of measurement.
Light - the agent that stimulates sight and makes things visible.
Ened - soul. Soul - the spiritual or immaterial part of a human being or animal, regarded as immortal.
A measurement of the agent that stimulates sight making immaterial visible.
Conscious illumination of matter and nonmatter to varying degrees.
Another way to break down enlightened is;
En-lightened:
En - a unit of measurement.
Lightened - to relieve of a burden in whole or in part.
The measurement of being enlightened to emotional intelligence of what the emotions are, as well as the sensations in their polarities so that one no longer suffers because of them. A measurement of the state of equanimity developed where things are fully accepted as they are with no desire to change them, in either a grasping or rejecting.
A distance from the body and mind so that the common place states do not disturb, in so lightening oneself of burdens.
As Death says in the Kathopanishad:
"God made sense turn outward, man therefore looks outward, not into himself. Now and again a daring soul, desiring immortality, has looked back and found himself.
The ignorant man runs after pleasure, sinks into the entanglements of death; but the wise man, seeking the undying, does not run among things that die.
He through whom we see, taste, smell, feel, hear, enjoy, knows everything. He is that Self.
The wise man by meditating upon the self-dependent, all-pervading Self, understands waking and sleeping and goes beyond sorrow."
From Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj
“You are neither the body nor in the body. There is no such thing as body. You have grievously misunderstood yourself. To understand rightly, investigate.
You are not in the body, the body is in you! The mind is in you. They happen to you. They are there because you find them interesting.”
